How to Take a Screenshot

This article covers how to capture a screenshot on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android.

Windows

Capture the full screen and save it as a file

  1. Press Windows + PrtScn.
  2. Your screen will dim briefly, confirming the capture.
  3. Find the image in Pictures > Screenshots.

Capture a specific area

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S.
  2. Drag to select the area you want to capture.
  3. The image is copied to your clipboard. Paste it with Ctrl + V.

Copy the full screen without saving a file

  1. Press PrtScn by itself.
  2. Paste the image anywhere with Ctrl + V.

Mac

Capture the full screen

  1. Press Cmd + Shift + 3.
  2. The screenshot saves automatically to your Desktop.

Capture a specific area

  1. Press Cmd + Shift + 4.
  2. Drag to select the area you want to capture.
  3. Release to capture. The image saves to your Desktop.

Capture a specific window

  1. Press Cmd + Shift + 4.
  2. Press Space.
  3. Click the window you want to capture.

Copy to clipboard instead of saving a file

  1. Add Ctrl to any of the shortcuts above (for example, Cmd + Ctrl + Shift + 4).
  2. The image copies to your clipboard instead of saving to your Desktop.

Phone (iPhone and Android)

iPhone with Face ID (no Home button)

  1. Press the Side button and Volume Up button at the same time.
  2. Release immediately. The screen will flash to confirm the capture.

iPhone with Home button

  1. Press the Home button and Side/Top button at the same time.

Android (most phones)

  1. Press the Power button and Volume Down button at the same time.
  2. Hold for about one second, then release.

Finding your screenshot

  • iPhone: Open the Photos app and check the Screenshots album.
  • Android: Open the Photos or Gallery app and check the Screenshots folder.
