Using Citrix (or any other remote application) requires a pervasive connection to the internet. The connection must be steady compared to traditional web browsing, which only needs the connection to pull down fresh data.
Here's how you can run a simple test on your internet connection:
- Click on the GO button... you will see a display similar to this:
Followed by this:
There are two things that make up a good connection:
1) Bandwidth - The Download speed and Upload speed together represent your available bandwidth. The numbers represent (in megabits per second) how much data you can send and receive in given period of time. Basically, it's comparable to getting a gallon of water from either a fire hydrant or a soda straw. Another way to think of it is rush hour happening on a either a one lane highway or a six lane expressway.
2) PING - Ping measures something called latency. An internet connection can have a good upload speed, and a good download speed. Behind the scenes, this is all accomplished by sending lots of small "packets" of data. If the packets occasionally get lost and have to be resent, this is no problem (it's what gives the internet it's reliability!). The Citrix connection will still be good. But if the number of resent packets gets too high, the internet connection will start to have "timeouts". This is the point where your Citrix connection will have slowness and disconnects.
If the two measurements indicate a slow connection, you can try the following:
- Try rebooting your router
- Switch to a different wireless connection
- Switch from a wireless to a hard-wired connection
- Check with your internet provider
Of course, you definitely have a connection problem if you see something like this instead of the previous screen:
For latency problems, there's a more involved test that you can run:
From your local machine (not in Citrix), click the Windows button, enter RUN, and then enter cmd.
When the command prompt window opens, e
nter the following command: ping www.google.com -t
Here is an example of a good connection (response times are <20ms and there are no drops)
Here is an example of a poor connection with multiple drops (Request timed out) - these can cause your Citrix connection to drop:
If you see any instances of "Request timed out" or multiple times that are >20ms, you can try the following:
- Try rebooting your router
- Switch to a different wireless connection
- Switch from a wireless to a hard-wired connection
- Check with your internet provider
